What influences child support calculations?

On Behalf of Rudolph & Associates LLC | Nov 11, 2022 | Divorce

Divorce when you share children with your spouse often means a requirement to pay child support in Florida. For the duration of a custody agreement, you will need to consistently contribute to the financial needs of your children.

As you prepare to face this new expense, you might have concerns about how court officials calculate payments. Knowing some of the things they consider may help you face your situation with confidence.

Income

The amount of money both you and your spouse bring in will be a large determinant in the calculation of payments. Courts may also look at the standard of living your children have had throughout your marriage and how a split will impact reality for them. According to U.S. News, your income also includes bonuses and commissions, as well as any supplemental income for disabilities.

Health care

If your children have unique health care needs that require ongoing treatment or therapy, the court will assess these needs when calculating a child support payment amount. Examples include insulin supplies, ADHD medication and speech therapy resources.

Daily expenses

Depending on the arrangements you make to accommodate work and careers, your children might need daycare. You may also wish to keep them involved in extracurricular activities that cost money to participate in. Other daily expenses include necessities like school lunch, shelter and transportation.

Caring for your children is a big financial commitment. Despite your split, you and your soon-to-be ex should continue to share the responsibility of raising and providing for your children.
