Expect the unexpected during a divorce

On Behalf of Rudolph & Associates LLC | Aug 26, 2020 | Divorce

There are many ways that your life will change when you go through a divorce. Some individuals think that they know what to expect as they work through this; however, there are some aspects of a divorce that you might not think about that are actually common.

The first year after the divorce will likely be rough. You’ll go through a lot of firsts. These include the first holiday season, first time walking past a place that was special to your and your ex and similar experiences. You might not think that you will feel emotions when you go through these, but you likely will. Be prepared for that roller coaster of ups and downs.

People who have children with their ex are often shocked at how much they still have to interact. Raising children together takes a lot of effort. Even though you aren’t living in the same house, you’ll still have to make a lot of the decisions together. You’ll have to see each other when the kids go from one house to the other. Thinking about how you can deal with the emotions of this might give you options to draw from when the time comes.

As you’re going through the divorce, make sure that you’re taking steps to protect yourself. This is sometimes difficult because many decisions are emotional. Try to think about the practical side of every decision you make. This might help you choose the options that are in your best interests. Your attorney can help you through this aspect of the divorce by helping you understand what’s possible in your case.
